PART THREE

Buffy and Angel watched Spike leave and then headed back to the Bronze to let Giles know what had transpired with Spike. They needed to find this guy McSchae and end his revenant making ways fast. The last thing Buffy wanted was forty revenants wreaking havoc when one was bad enough. She found Giles and gave him the condensed version and looked around for Willow and Xander. She spotted Xander doing a weird dance with an equally weird dressed girl and motioned for him.

"Where is Willow?" Buffy glanced through the crowd.

He kept tapping his foot off beat to the steel guitars wailing in the background. "She said she was leaving and that McSchae was walking her home. Who is McSchae? He looked older than us."

"Did you say McSchae?" Buffy gasped.

"I didn't say McDonald's" Xander said with a shrug.

"Come on, Xander. We have to find her now." Buffy seized his arm and pulled him out the door with her and the others.

Xander didn't seem at all surprised when Buffy informed him that McSchae was a vampire. He scratched his head and said, "Figures. To score a date in this town..one would have to be dead."

"Knock it off, Xander." Buffy, Xander and Angel had decided to scour the cemetary while Giles and Ms. Calendar drove through the sleeping town. Buffy was well aware that every second that Willow was gone was a second closer to losing her.

***

In the cemetary, Willow watched as McSchae poured her a shot of vodka. She had never had vodka. Maybe it was tequila. She had never had anything alcoholic so she wasn't sure. She was very uncomfortable with the thought of drinking. She was even more uncomfortable with the thought of him drinking. She glanced around, wishing she had stayed in the Bronze. Of course, she relished the look on Xander's face when she told him she was leaving with McSchae. She fidgeted with her purse string and said, "It's uhm..late. I thought you were going to walk me home."

"A walk home? I don't do nothing for free. How about you indulge in a drink here and then give me a kiss and I'll walk you right home." McSchae offered her a shot glass.

Willow shook her head and smiled. "I already told you on the way that I don't drink."

"Look here now. You seem all tense and this'll calm you right down." He put the glass in her hand. "Don't offend your host."

"This is a cemetary..there is no host." Willow sat the drink on a tombstone and backed away. "Thanks for the dancing and everything. I have to go home."

"Not so fast." McSchae said and grabbed her around the waist. "At least give me one kiss."

"No. I have to go now." Willow was getting scared. She was getting very scared and didn't know what to do.

"If I have to take a kiss...it'll hurt." McSchae growled and Willow looked up and screamed.

***

Buffy heard the scream and took off in the direction it had come. Angel and Xander were right behind her. It was so dark that she could barely make out the shapes of the tombstones but she did realize that tombstones weren't supposed to move. She was running at full speed and caught something out of the corner of her eye. She dared a glance and hit something full force. "Oomph" she bellowed as she hit the ground hard, losing her breath. The revenant grabbed her hair and yanked her to her feet. It was a vile and nasty old man. Buffy staked it and slumped to the ground to catch her breath.

"Buffy." Xander looked from left to right. "Now is not a good time for a break. We have some massive company."

"We gotta find McSchae." Angel pulled Buffy to her feet. "Look at them all."

Buffy would rather do anything than look at them all. They were everywhere. Some had no arms, others had no legs, and there were several that were rolling along the ground. "This way. Kill anything that moves." She charged through the night again looking for Willow. She heard a scuffle and heard her scream out again. Buffy took off and shouted for Angel and Xander to kill as many revenants as they could.

***

"Get off me!" Willow shouted. She used the tip of her boot to kick McSchae in a very delicate place and raced through the night. She realized that there were revenants all over the place when she fell over one that latched onto her leg. She screamed again as she remembered that if it bit her..she'd be all gory. She smashed in it's mouth with her trusty boot again jumped over another one. She ran for her life.

Xander staked a revenant and then tried to get his bearings. He glanced at Angel who was fighting in a swift and adept manner and considered staking him for a brief moment. There was a brief lull in the activity and Xander said, "Don't you feel bad? Killing family?"

"These are not my family." Angel glanced at him. "Don't you care at all what you say or do to people?"

"Sure." Xander nodded. "But you aren't a person so I could care less what I say to you."

Angel didn't have a chance to say anything because several revenants had gotten close enough to be a challenge. They were thinning them out but there were so many of them. Xander had to contend with two and was losing fast. Angel quickly staked the one he was dealing with and turned to look at Xander..who was pinned under one and was about to be bitten by one that was crawling. Angel grabbed the one off of him and snapped it's neck and then grabbed Xander. "There's just too many. We gotta go find Buffy." Angel said and darted through the army. Xander was muttering under his breath about killing everything that moved..and Angel moving... when he saw a figure approaching fast. He drew up the stake and then braced himself for the flying projectile that was now sailing at him.

Willow screamed as she saw the figure that she was flinging herself towards. The figure screamed back and Willow realized it was Xander. She threw herself into him and they toppled over a low headstone and rolled down an small embankment. They rolled right into Buffy who was squaring off with McSchae.

Buffy tripped backwards and McSchae seized the opportunity to jump on her. The four of them scuffled for a split second and then Xander jumped to his feet and realized that he was still holding a stake. This is it. He thought. This is my time to prove to the world..or at least to Buffy that I am capable. He pushed Buffy out of the way and plunged the stake into McSchae's back. The vampire's scream pierced the night's silence and almost deafened the three friends. Willow covered her ears and shut her eyes tight. Buffy realized that the sound wasn't just coming from McSchae..all the revenants were howling in pain as death closed it's jaw on them.

Xander looked at Buffy and Willow and grinned widely. "Who's the man? Hold your applause...the hero has left the building!"

Angel ran up and grabbed Buffy. "Are you OK?"

"I am now." Buffy smiled up at him. "Were we finished with our talk?"

Angel smiled at her and took her hand. "Yeah. Now, I think that we had a date and the Bronze is open for another hour. What do you say we make the most of it?"

Xander looked perplexed as he said. "Way to go, Xander. You did a great job!"

"I agree." Willow said. She watched Buffy and Angel walk off together and then stop to kiss as the moon came out and lit up the darkened sky.

*** Epilogue***

Xander grinned and dug into Willow's lunch bag. "So..another date night in Sunnydale."

"I'm living date free these days." Willow laughed. "I had a date with a vampire. It may be all poetic for Buffy and Angel but it freaked me out."

Xander put his arm around Willow. "Buffy and Angel freak me out!"

"All of you freak me out." Cordelia said from behind them and walked away.

"Now there's a girl you wanna take home to mama." Xander laughed as Buffy joined them.

"Toga night." Buffy bit into her salad. "Are we there?"

"You femmes may need protection." Xander grinned. "You know who to ask for. I'm all hero!"

"A true hero exhibits some modesty." Willow said.

"I am a rebel hero. A hero without a modesty clause." Xander laughed. "Get it? Hero Without A Cause..clause? I slay me!"

Giles walked up behind them and cleared his throat. "Buffy, someone left this in the library for you." He handed her an envelope with her name on it.

She looked at it curiously and then tore into it. She read the card and then said furiously, "Spike! Spike sent me a 'Thank You For Doing My Dirty Work Card.'"

"Gotta love that foreign charm." Xander laughed. "Now there's a guy you want to take home to mama."

"Has anyone thought of introducing him to Cordy?" Willow asked.

"Willow!" Buffy raised her eyebrow.

"I slay ME!" Willow laughed.
